The study is a Randomised Controlled Trial were the participants receives a 1-on1 reading or math intervention. The paraprofessionals receives weekly training and support online. Here the researchers have found a way to follow up large numbers of participants spread over a large geographical area and developed a framework for supporting professional development that we are eager to learn more about. <b></b></span></span></li>

The study involves the implementation of reading instruction in two different modalities: digital and paper based. The research objective is to investigate if the degree of engagement and challenging behaviour differs between the two different modalities. <b></b></span></span></li>

<li class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">The Down Syndrome LanguagePlus - Vanderbilt Edition </span></b><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">is a pilot study investigating the vocabulary gains of four children with Down syndrome using a translated short version of the DSL+ vocabulary intervention. We are eager for the last participants to complete training so we can see the results of this collaborative project. Meanwhile, preliminary findings shows the feasibility of parents implementing the intervention in their homes with minimal support. <b></b></span></span></li>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Professor </span><a href="https://www.sv.uio.no/psi/english/people/aca/egilny/index.html"><span style="color: blue; font-size: large;">Egil Nygaard</span></a><span style="font-size: large;"> together with Mikkel Glimsdal and Daniel Bryne from the Departement of Psychology talked about a new study in the planning stages on gluten-sensitivity and development in children with Down syndrome. The study is a follow up of the study; </span><a href="http://the%20relation%20between%20the%20psychological%20functioning%20of%20children%20with%20down%20syndrome%20and%20their%20urine%20peptide%20levels%20and%20levels%20of%20serum%20antibodies%20to%20food%20proteins/"><span style="color: blue; font-size: large;">The relation between the psychological functioning of children with Down syndrome and their urine peptide levels and levels of serum antibodies to food proteins</span></a><span style="font-size: large;">. In this study published in 2001 Nygaard and his colleagues found that there were a significant relation between antibodies to gluten and psychological functioning. In this new cross sectional study they are further investigating the connection between biological markers for gluten sensitivity (not celiac desease) and psychological functioning in 60 children with Down syndrome (5 - 11 years old). The main focus is on cognitive functioning and behavioural markers on anxiousness, sadness and anger.</span></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Narrative skills in first graders with Down syndrome</span></b></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Professor Kari-Anne B. Næss presented preliminary findings from three different studies on narrative skills in first graders With Down syndrome, also including data from the Down Syndrome LanguagePlus-project. The aim of the study is to investigate the narrative skills in six year olds with Down syndrome and to analyse if the scores on a narrative test is a good indicators of linguistic skills in six year olds with Down syndrome. Since children With Down syndrome are at risk of weak narrative skills and narrative skills are important for both social and academic functioning it is important to reveal knowledge relevant for effective interventions. Preliminary findings from the analysis (N=52 at the moment will be ca 150 when finished) was presented and showed large variation in results between participants. The results showed that it is a myth that individuals with Down syndrome in general are unable to retell stories and talk about their opinions and understanding. Almost 27% of the children were able to retell some information using oral language.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Earlier this year, Christopher Lemons received an internal grant from Vanderbilt University to translate and pilot an American short version of the Down Syndrome LanguagePlus Intervention (DSL+). Since then we have been working together on the adaption of the American version. During Our stay, we have discussed linguistic challanges related to the translation of tasks, study design, measures and different other methodological aspects in order to esure high quality research. We met with SLP students working on the projectt and we participated in the first round of audio recordings for the app. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Furthermore, we started the preparations of a new review study related to interventions in children with intellectual disabilities. This review will be a collaboration Project between senior and junior researchers at Peabody and UiO. In addition, we have started the work on a research proposal related to a new intervention project that will be sent to the research counsil of Norway within April 10th. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Christopher Lemons organized a fantastic Down syndrome symposium. Altogether, there were 9 talks from researchers within the field, focusing on communication, speech, language, phonological awareness, reading, and teaching of children with Down syndrome. We are Grateful for all the researchers, both speakers and active discussion partners, for providing Insight into recent and ongoing studies as well as contributing with valuable input in methodological discussions. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We would also extend a great thanks to Lynn Fuchs, Douglas Fuchs and Christopher Lemons for inviting us to their expert panel discussion on career and research applications for the departments PhD students. with international colleagues and parents, and arrange the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Symposium on Research in Language and Communication among Children with
Down Syndrome</i>. The objective of the symposium was to increase knowledge
about the language and communication interventions for children with Down
syndrome in order to improve the future research quality and intervention
approaches in the field of practice. In order to explore the current state of
the field and guide future research and practice this symposium first highlighted
the findings from a systematic review, summarizing the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">effect</i> <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">of existing interventions</i>.
Second, the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">implementation quality</i> in
the previous studies was reviewed. Thereafter, we presented two sub studies
from the DSL+-project. One of the sub studies reported the <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">framework of the intervention and some preliminary findings of the
effect </i>and the other was related to<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> interactive
dialogical reading of the picture books </i>included in the program. Our
symposium was more than filled to capacity; In addition to filling all seats people
was standing or sitting on the floor in the back of the congress room. I am thankful
to the audience for their participation and all the interesting questions and

us by e.g. Kelly Burgoyne who talked about shared book reading, Chris Lemons that
focused on research on enhancing literacy outcomes, and Sue Buckley who talked
about Developing evidence based early intervention and education. Yesterday
morning Deborah Fidler gave a very well structured and interesting talk on which
skills are important to monitor closely and to intervene in young children with
Down syndrome especially with the focus on school functioning. Fidler is a
great researcher within the field and has a long time experiences doing a lot
of great empirical work. This time I also found Fidler’s talk interesting but I
was a bit protonated by her crossing out both cognitive skills and
language/communication as NOT RELATED TO SCHOOL FUNCTIONING. Her focus in the
talk was of course the executive functioning which she obvious wanted to
highlight as important. However, there is challenging to demonstrate that an
effect is absolutely absent. Her interpretation of a non-significant result is in
my opinion taken way too long (I think it is this paper she was referring to:</span><span lang="EN-US" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: "calibri";"> </span></span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;"><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4012569/pdf/167.pdf"><span style="color: blue;">https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4012569/pdf/167.pdf</span></a>
). Eventual lack of unique contribution does not mean that cognition and
language and communication it is not contributing. This result depends among
others on overlap between measures, significance level, number of particippants
and power in the analysis. To make such a strong claim based on a sample size
around 20 and for three conditions can actually be totally misleading. I really
hope that the parents and practitioners among the audience not think that there
is no need for language training for the child to improve their school
functioning. A GREAT DEAL OF EVIDENCE HAS SHOWN THAT LANGUAGE IS IMPORTANT FOR
A RANGE OF LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENTAL AREAS RELEVANT TO ACADEMIC AS WELL AS
SOCIAL SKILLS. I had hope I had misunderstood something in her talk but a short
chat in the break with some of my international colleagues confirmed that my
understanding was not a result me not being native English speaker or not
following her justifications, Unfortunately there were not possible to ask
questions in this session so I still have a few unanswered questions for Fidler
regarding her interpretation of the results. The congress also had it’s own
poster area, Several poster presentations were given and especially I was interested
in the interventions by Rebecca Baxter on grammar and Lauren LeJeune on
phonological awareness. Liz Smith from our project group also gave a poster
presentation on a novel measure to track potential early signs of dementia. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

plans have been made, ideas for funding applications have been discussed, and
we have also met with Norwegian parents and resource persons. After all these
years in the same research community many of these people have been good
friends that we really appreciate to stay in touch with. We are now about to
arrive in Norway again after some intensive days but Liz will stay for two more
days in Glasgow. I am grateful for this year’s congress and for being part of

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Silje Hokstad ble "headhuntet" som forskningsassistent I DSL+ - prosjektet i 2014. Hun startet først i en bitteliten prosentstilling som ble økt etter hvert. Med tiden fikk hun 100% stilling. Etter at hun leverte sin masteroppgave høsten 2017 gikk hun over i en forskerstilling i prosjektet og har gjort en aldeles strålende jobb!

landsomfattende intervensjonsstudie. I prosjektet har det vært viktig at alle
lærerne som utøver den daglige intervensjonsøkten sitter inne med lik kunnskap
om undervisningsopplegget, materiellet, organiseringen og gjennomføringen. Avstandene
mellom deltakerskolene er store. I planleggingen av læreropplæringen ble det
derfor drøftet hvordan vi kunne gjennomføre opplæringen innenfor prosjektets
tidsperspektiv, budsjettrammer, og ikke minst hvordan vi kunne legge best mulig
til rette for at det skulle være organisatorisk mulig for lærerne og deres
skoler å ta del. Ved å reise på kurs må man beregne reisetid og evt.
overnatting og sette inn vikar for den/de som er borte. I tillegg går det
administrasjonstid med til bestilling av reise, innsending av reiseregninger og
refusjon av utlegg. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

<span style="mso-ansi-language: NO-BOK;"><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">I drøftingsprosessen
var det likevel ingen tvil om at det ville vært hensiktsmessig og møtes ansikt
til ansikt i oppstarten av et års-langt samarbeid. Dette ville gitt en unik
mulighet til å etablere kontakt og skape dialog med skolene. Samtidig var det
jo lagt opp til treffpunkter face to face i løpet av perioden de tre rundene
når elevene skulle testes av en representant fra prosjektet, deriblant før
prosjektstart. I tillegg ville skolene også bli oppringt fra oss underveis samt
ha muligheter for dialog med prosjektteamet gjennom perioden via mail og telefon.
Landsdekkende intervensjonsstudier i skole eller barnehage er generelt kostbare
med tanke på opplæring av pedagoger eller andre som utfører
intervensjonsarbeidet. Å samles på kurs med alle utgiftene som ble nevnt over gjør
et stort innhogg i et forskningsbudsjett. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Personlig oppmøte på kurs ville i tillegg være
mer organisatorisk krevende for skolene, noe som potensielt kunne ha medført
større fravær fra opplæringen.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>E-læring
ble derfor vurdert som et mulig redskap for felleskommunikasjon/-samarbeid med
skoler rundt om i vårt langstrakte land. Til slutt ble praktiske og
budsjettmessige hensyn utslagsgivende og vi valgte en e-lærings form på
lærerkursene våre.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

utgangspunktet litt usikre på hvordan lærerne ville reagere på at opplæringen
skulle foregå over nett, og lurte på om dette kunne medføre risiko for å miste
deltakere hvor foresatte hadde levert samtykke. Slik ble det imidlertid ikke!
Lærere er tøffe – og villige til å delta uansett om det for noen kanskje virket
litt skremmende til å begynne med. Lærerne fikk i forkant av opplæringen skriftlig
informasjon om hvordan innloggingen fungerte og noen tidspunkter tilgjengelig
der de fritt kunne logge seg inn i nettrommet for å prøve. I rommet satt det da
en representant fra prosjektet som kunne gi veiledning i hvordan systemet
fungerte. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="mso-ansi-language: NO-BOK;"><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: large;">Lærernes digitale
kompetanse og erfaringer gjenspeiler trolig den digitale kompetanse i samfunnet
for øvrig. Noen hadde gjennomført nettbaserte studier tidligere og var svært
godt vant med ulike e-læringsformer, mens andre hadde lite erfaring. De fleste
lærerne gjennomførte prøveinnloggingen selv mens noen få søkte hjelp enten fra
lokal IT ved egen skole, fra oss over telefon eller fra teknisk support ved HSN
(som administrerte den nettbaserte løsningen vi valgte). Avhengig av hvor mange
lærere som var involverte ved den enkelte skole var det noen som fulgte
opplæringen alene, mens andre var samlet foran en storskjerm. Det ble gjort
opptak av seminaret slik at enkelte lærere som av gyldige grunner var
forhindret i å kunne delta fikk se opplæringen i etterkant.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

kurset/seminaret skulle være så effektivt som mulig var det viktig for oss å ha
god og effektiv support rundt opplæringssituasjonen for å unngå å bruke deltakernes
tid på enkeltskolers tekniske utfordringer. Av den grunn ble nettopplæringen
gjennomført fra Notodden (Høgskolen i Sør-Øst Norge/HSN). HSN var tidlig ute
med e-læring og er pr i dag en av de fremste på e-læring i Norge. De har hatt
en spesiell satsning på e-læring gjennom f.eks. en rekke nettbaserte studier, e-læringsprosjektet
e@HiT, digital eksamen, investeringer i infrastruktur og utstyr,
kompetansebygging i personalet og erfaringsdeling i organisasjonen. De har

spørreskjema med åpne spørsmål til en av lærerne som tok del i DSL+-opplæringen denne høsten om
hennes erfaringer med opplegget. Jeanette Rasmussen Andersen jobber som
spesialpedagog ved Veavågen skole i Karmøy kommune hvor førsteklasse deltar i
DSL+-prosjektet. Hun har tidligere gjennomført nettbaserte studier og forteller
at hun så positivt på en slik organiseringsform da hun ellers ville hatt lang
reisevei med de utgiftene det medfører for skolen. Under følger en

hvordan det ville bli å sitte så lenge framfor skjermen, men tiden fløy! Jeg
visste ikke helt hva jeg skulle forvente med tanke på innholdet i opplæringen,
men opplevde å få god oversikt over hvordan DSL+-øktene skulle gjennomføres og
hvorfor. Jeg sitter igjen med et godt læringsutbytte selv om jeg satt alene og
ikke hadde noen å diskutere med. En ulempe med nettundervisning er jo nettopp
at det ikke gir noe særlig rom for dialog og diskusjon mellom deltakerne. Men
så blir det lettere for kursholderne å holde tiden og ikke havne på et
sidespor!</span></span><br />

Programvaren var intuitiv og lett å bruke. Jeg testet rommet i forkant, men
fikk ikke hodetelefonene til å fungere. Det gikk heldigvis greit å lytte uten
da jeg satt i et stille rom under opplæringen. Det var også litt problemer med
hakkete bilde og lyd i starten av opplæringen (tross god internettforbindelse),
men noen slike utfordringer må man regner med. Jeg likte veldig godt at det
gikk an å skrive kommentarer og spørsmål i chatten underveis i opplæringen, og
at en av kursholderne forsøkte å svare fortløpende parallelt med forelesningen
som pågikk. På den måten kunne man oppklare hvis man gikk glipp av noe, og føle
at det var rom for litt dialog likevel. Jeg har også utvekslet flere e-poster
med prosjektgruppen i etterkant når jeg har hatt spørsmål om opplegget eller
behov for å drøfte mulige tilpasninger til min elev. Jeg kunne tenke meg å ha
opptak av opplæringen tilgjengelig i etterkant for å kunne gå tilbake ved
behov. Ellers er jeg veldig fornøyd med de to halvdags-seminarene og bruker
gjerne denne programvaren igjen!</span><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

and I shared a great deal of communality in our research interests. We discussed
additional ways for us to collaborate and as a result I have had the chance to spend
some days in Nashville visiting Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt
University is ranked as the best special education doctoral training program in
the US and has a team of excellent senior researchers within special education including
Ann Kaiser, Lynn Fuchs and Douglas Fuchs, all of whom I was honored to meet. I was
asked to give a talk about my research, and I also got the chance to meet with highly

several years of future work were made. We had nice discussions and planned for
collaborative grant application(s) and future research visits. Our first small
collaborative pilot study related to vocabulary intervention in children with
Down syndrome is planned to start in the spring 2018 and will challenge me to
learn more about single case experiments which I never have conducted before. I
am eager to learn more about single case since it will be a useful tool to
evaluate designs before scaling up a large scale RCT study.<o:p></o:p></span></span></span></span></span></span></div>

Nashville means that it may also be possible to participate in an intervention

waiting list and will be contacted when the recruitment process of the study

Vi har mottatt flere henvendelser fra lærere som var med i DSL+-prosjektet i fjor som har begynt å kjenne på tomrommet etter DSL+. "Har dere noe mer?" sier en lærer, "Vi kjenner på et vakuum" skriver en annen. </h4>

For oss som er i prosjektteamet er det på mange måter godt å få slike tilbakemeldinger, og vi er stolte over å ha utviklet noe som deltakerene våre har tatt til seg og opplevd som et positivt både for elevene og for seg selv. Samtidig må vi kjenner vi på et ansvar for å bidra til at elevenes opplæringsbehov blir ivaretatt videre. Perioden etter at intervensjonen er avsluttet er viktig for hvorvidt fremgangen fortsetter og ikke minst i forhold til om kunnskapen blir generalisert og anvendt ytterligere.<br />

Siden DSL+ er et digitalt intervensjonsprogram er utviklingskostnadene relativt store sammenlignet med hva det koster å utvikle annet læringsmateriale. Likevel er mulighetene som det digitale gir oss en av aspektene som gjør intervensjonen unik. På det nåværende tidspunkt har vi dessverre ikke forskningsmidler til å videreutvikle og utvide intervensjonen, men vi har planer om å søke ytterligere midler sammen med andre utdanningsinstitusjoner i både Europa og USA. Da det er hard konkurranse om slike midler må vi regne med å måtte søke flere ganger før vi får tilslag. I tillegg tar søknadsprosessene ofte lang tid. Dette betyr at et eventuelt tilslag på prosjektmidler sannsynligvis ikke vil komme årets 2. klassinger til gode.<br />

For å støtte deltakerskolene våre i sitt videre arbeid ønsker vi imidlertid å tilby en webinarrekke med oppstart i mars 2018. I disse webinarene vil vi presentere grunnleggende elementer fra DSL+ - intervensjonen og hvordan disse kan benyttes i den videre organiseringen av undervisningstilbudet.<br />
